What would I major in?

Question

I want to be an elementary school teacher (kindergarten) and I was wondering, what exactly would be my major? I can't major in Education, so would it be english? But wouldn't an english major be geared more towards reading and writing, then it would teaching? I go to San Francisco State if it helps. I am planning on going to go talk to a counseler but I thought I would ask here first just to have kind of an idea when I go talk to the counseler so I don't end up confusing her too! lOl

I'm doing the same thing and have got all the advise that was available to me. I currently work in a school and I have been told that if you are not going to major in education or early education then just get a 4 year degree in anything and crossover once you graduate. It will require a little more time but it is easy to do and very common. Just pick a 4 year major that you enjoy, and it would be advisable to pick a major that you want to focus on with your classroom once your teaching. (as a lot of elementary schools do classroom changes per subject to prepare them for middle school class change)

I have a good friend who is a second grade school teacher here in Santa Cruz and her BA isn't particularly relevant. I'm not even sure what it is--social studies, or something, with a minor in Spanish. I believe you can major in anything provided you will teach in the lower grades.

A proficiency in Spanish, however, whether you have a degree in it or not, is extremely practical in California.

Definitely talk to your councelor about this and you might even contract the principals of a few local schools to find out their preferences.

You would just be majoring in Elementary or Early Childhood Education, you would not be majoring in English since you need to know all subjects and not just one specific area. Of course, it depends on your school.

I'm in college to be a high school english teacher, so I'm double majoring in secondary education and English.
