  1. In my opinion, a blog/forum website should be properly optimized to get traffic to the website. It also means getting good SERP's. Other than that, quality and unique content on a blog and continuous traffic of members on a forum.

  2. the functionality is the best thing in a good web site.

  3. This is what I tell my clients:

Any site regardless of its design, content, features or any other attribute is “good” if it does two things.  Meets the goals of the sit owner, and gives the web user what they want.  Look at Goggle (or any search engine for that matter) the vast majority of the “content” on a search engine is the snippets that are scrapped from others sites. (Yes they have added their own stuff over the years, but people primarily go to Goggle to see other sites content)  Some of the most popular and universal sites have little or no design element.  Wikipedia, Dmoz etc. Then again the best site in the world may not be good if it doesn’t meet the owners’ objectives.  What if you owned an ecommerce site with 15k visitors a day and no one bought anything.  Very few people would call that a success.

So the first thing is to decide what you want the site to do.  If you can sum it up in one short sentence your off to a good start.  Something like I want to share my love of photography, or I want to make $3000 a month from my site.

The second thing is to define as best as possible what your target audience is going to use the site for.  Be specific as possible.  Ã¢Â€ÂœView black and white photos of Los Angeles” is better than “View pictures.”

Once these two questions are fixed, they can act as your “constitution”.  Everything that comes up for consideration can be defined by these two questions.  Is there a clear connection between this feature/idea/content and my (or the owners) goal?  Does this feature/idea/content directly benefit my target audience?

    Hope this helps.
