  1. You may need to evaluate yourself and recognise what hinders your concentration.

Is it serious external matters such as:

    finances, relationships, work commitments, etc

    or external distractions:

TV, radio, interesting websites, people walking past the window. Or maybe visitors or friends stopping in when you want to concentrate.

Or it may be your internal:

Your thoughts - some worry or problem, something someone said, etc.

When the time to concentrate come and you realise you're having trouble - see which of these it is. Then you'll have some idea of what to do about it.

Then comes finding the strength to put that distraction away or make what ever change must be made. You  gotta decide what's more important to you in that situation; gotta 'do whatever it takes to win'.

  3. If the person has a constant, chronic problem paying attention, then he or she may have Attention Deficit Disorder, a medical condition caused by a chemical imbalance due to the brain not producing enough of the appropriate chemicals.  People with this condition have a hard time paying attention, and they also may find it very frustrating to sit in the same place for a long time. They get distracted easily, and often fidget with things.  They have trouble remembering appointments and other things they need to do, and usually are impatient and can be very disorganized.

If the person has not already done so, they should make an appointment with a neurologist who can test them to see if they have ADD. If they are diagnosed with ADD, then the doctor should prescribe them a medication such as Ritalin or Concerta. When a person with ADD takes these meds, it produces a substance that is similar to the chemicals that their brain doesn't make enough of, and so their attention problem is corrected.  Also, the person should regularly meet with the doctor to make sure that the medicine is working and that they are on the right dosage.  In addition to taking meds, many people with ADD also benefit from individual therapy or counseling.

If the person does not have ADD but is merely looking for a way to improve short term concentration, then I suggest sitting near the front of the classroom and working in a place that minimizes distractions.

  4. Turn the TV and the LOUD MUSIC OFF... and then reduce distractions
