what about an agrarian, pre-industrial mother?

by "wake-and-feed" i don't mean by a clock but by other events like sunrise, the time it takes to feed other children, cook a meal, weeving a basket, sunset, etc. Ruff intervals of three or four hours.

  1. Feed on demand. There was no clocks and no where to go. The kids a sleep that gives you time to do something else. Only a complete neurotic would schedule breast feeding.

    Same as one.

  2. First, make sure the saber tooth has eaten or has wandered off.

Second make sure the large males in the tribe have had their full least they take the food she is trying to feed her off spring.

Third, make sure the tribe is not ready, the large males having engorged themselves, to depart for places not known.

Life was not easy even after, what we euphemistically refer to as civilization, was common.

  3. Robertb ,

\Obviously you have not breast feed ,,? Only a guy would say something so dumb as what you just said ,

Feeding on demand is very common  most moms keep the baby to breast for the first month , most feed on demand but after the first month  work the baby  into a "schedule".

But all breast feeding moms   wake a child to breast feed , and do it often ,  You wake the child and feed it early to make time for other stuff ,  . You also wake a sleeping baby to teach the baby to be on your =schedule .  You may wake a baby up at 11 pm and feed it so that it dose not wake up hungry at 3 am when you want to sleep duuu ,, or wake  a baby and feed it before you leave the child for a few hours , .   even in Olden times before clocks women  had schedules. you know wake and feed baby so you can go milk the cow  and not have a screaming  hungry baby to deal with ,, There are other reasons a man would not understand .

if your milk fills up every 3 hours you would wake the child to feed because it HURTS  if the b*****s get to full. Some women have to feed every  few hours .  And in the old days they did not have breast pumps like women today have to empty the pressure.

Every woman and every child is different.

Leave it to a man to comment on something he knows nothing about

and on your comment" Feed on demand. There was no clocks and no where to go. "

What world are you thinking about , Mothers always have a million things to do, and a million chores , washing , cleaning , cooking , working, shopping gardening, tending to live stock, etc, etc,  and tending babies , as if that is not a full time job init self , with out the working, cooking and cleaning,

  4. In the pre-agrarian era the mother would have kept the baby with her during most of the time.At night the baby would have slept along side its mother. The use of  part of her clothing would have made a sling type of carrier that the child would remain in until it was too heavy for her.

As the baby was in such close proximity to her breast almost all of the time. It was easier to maintain a feed on demand schedule.
