This is a few sites that might help you. Sensory boxes are often used for babies and toddlers but I think can support older children at times like circle time to prompt discussion, encourage a theme, excitement etc.

    Also,

-Enhances the senses and vocabulary to describe things.

-Will help staff pick up problems with eye sight, smells, hearing etc.

-Can begin role play and promote finding and creating own props.

  2. -fine motor skills

    -tactile discrimination

    -tactile awareness

    -creativity

    -cooperative, prosocial behaviour

    -learning skills

    -logical thinking skills

-concepts and information leading to a fuller understanding of the world

    -sensory memory

  3. The sensory table/box is a great tool for 4-5 yr old children! It promotes math skills as children experiment with different size containers, counting objects that are in the table etc.

It also promotes language-building vocabulary, and social skills as they negotiate sharing the items in the table.  It also promotes learning science as children predict and explore how things work or what happens when certain ingredients are combined. (for example, if you put a container of baking soda and one of vinegar and provide a chance to mix the two there is a physical reaction to observe.

Sensory boxes also help with fine tuning fine motor skills. You can put paper and scissors in there to cut, picking up small objects with tweezers is a pre-writing skill.

You can promote reading if you put a recipe (with pictures of the ingredients) at the sensory table along with the ingredients and measuring cups/spoons to make playdough.

The opporutnities for learning are endless for a sensory  table!!   Children this age still learn best with hands on learning. The sensory table is perfect for that.
