No, not a new board... something small - ~$20 - that usually you wouldn't spend the money yourself but will be cool as a present.

It's a co-worker, and I can't say I know anything about surfing. :-)

He also does free-diving.

  1. Here's a few ideas in your price range:

    How about a surf map:

One of those car emblems of a shark that says 'Surfer':

    A rash guard:

Hawaiian seat covers are always fun!:

  2. Here's something my wife made for me as a present that I use all the time and really appreciate.  She took two beach towels and sewed them together into a poncho so I can easily change out of my wetsuite and trunks at the beach.  Towels were around $8 each.  Some of my friends are asking for them now.  I'm sure it would be a useful gift.

  3. theres a new surfing video out called :"my eyes wont dry 2" its about tube riding which surfers of any generation can enjoy either that or a dash board hula girl.

  4. At $20 you're not gonna find a good surf DVD for that price.  Anything today is at least $29.99.  Unless he's into the old school Bruce Brown era stuff which is much cheaper, you're better off skipping DVDs.

I'd suggest maybe a new pair of flip-flops if you can get a good deal on Reefs, Rainbows, etnies, etc.

Or a pack of travel wax, as it has a variety of waxes for different water temperatures.

A changing mat/ bag combo is good for anyone that surfs where a wetsuit is needed... which is pretty much everywhere except in the tropics. (this is pretty much spot on for being $20 and a great idea)

A calendar with the tide chart is good for any surfer that's not a beginner.  It'll help a free-diver too.

If you can find a diver's knife for $20 that works too.  Not a pocket knife, but an actual diver's knife.  It's tough though as most quality knives start at around $40.

Clothes are a touchy thing though... some like the surf brands, some despise it.

Personally, I'd go with the changing mat/ bag combo... even if he already has one.  Those things get worn out with daily use.

  5. Get him a surf tatoo! ...or a gift certificate for one and go with him to choose it. Myany tatoo artists can make anything from a picture you think is cool. Something beachy or dolphins.

Get light colors that are more nautical.

One of my friends from swim team had a dolphin on his heel on his weak leg. If you swam into his feet doing laps you saw the dolphin. He said it was to help him kick.

Waves look cool & can be big accoss yer shoulders.

Surfer on a surfboard is cool & might fit on his arm.

  6. Membership to Surfrider Foundation with a magazine subscription.  Artwork is always a good choice.  Aaron Chang was mentioned, there is also a series that I believe is called California Classics

  7. That's a toughie. Most seasoned surfers have what they need for equipment. Perhaps a surf movie relating to their style. ie: Longboarding movie or a shortboarding movie. Veteran surfer tells me: Longboard movie and a couple bars of wax for a stocking stuffer ;) Merry xmas

  8. a gnarly picture frame!

  9. get him a surf retro art book of all the surfboards made, or a poster, thanks you cards something, I got a Vet friend surf art thank you notes and he loved them

  10. Here are some choices: 1) DVD's - but it's hard to pick the right one since it is a matter of your friend's  personal taste.  This would be a good choice if you know what kind of surfing he likes.  2) A leash - find out the type of board that he rides (longboard or shortboard), and go to a surf shop and ask for the best type of leash for the type of board that he rides.  May be a little more than $20.00.  3) A beach towell (good quality) with several bars of surf wax so he knows that the towell is for surfing.  4) If he's into surfing as a way to keep fit as well as have fun, you can put together a little pre-surf snack package with nutrition/energy bars of various types for him to eat before he goes surfing or between surf sessions.  5) A large duffle bag to store his surf and diving gear.  A bag with a lot of pockets is always helpful.  6) A subscription to Surfer Magazine or Surfing Magazine.  7) A medium sized duffle bag stuffed with several bars of surf wax, baby powder (if he wears a wet suit), vasaline, and sun screen.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!!!
