i am looking into getting another rifle for coyote hunting. we own a .22's and a 22\250 but my brother and i want another gun with minimal recoil and yet still a decent punch. i am 15 but i have large amounts of experiance with firearms and different types of calibers ranging from a .22 to a 300 win mag and lots in between. i do ahve a .243 at my disposal but id rather not have to use that because i do want this rifle for deer as well. i do intend on shooting only coyotes for now but do not intend on keeping the pelts for the reason being that we have a large amount of them and just need to get rid of them. so what would you recomend for a nice caliber?

  1. Your best choice is a 6mm Remington.* The muzzle velocity is 3100 ft per second using a 100 grain bullet.*

  2. I would recomment using the .243 you have for your varmints.  Nothing helps with deer hunting better than being more familiar with the action and calibers capabilities.  You will probably need a lighter bullet, but the handling will be the same.  In this case familiarity does not breed comtempt, but competence

  3. having land and animals on the land, I understand the need to eliminate coyotes. If you are just shooting them for the h**l of it and you have no animals they are killing then your just cruel.

A 223 would be a good choice, but then again you could get a 12ga and use slugs since your not worried about the pelts.

  4. I'm not clear what your objections are about the 243, which is about right for coyote. If you want something else for deer that isn't ridiculously large for coyote, then the quarter-bores are a good choice, and 257 Roberts would be my pick of that bunch. Or even 260 Remington or 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

  5. if you have a ,243 and want to master it I would not hesitate to use it on varmits and vermin.

I grew up with a .30-30 in. ranch country and shot just about every thing from squirrles to deer and a ton of chucks, dogs and yotes with it.

Plus I learned to reload for this gun... education to say the least

all the prairie dogs and coyote you shoot with your deer rifle will make you a better shot on real game targets come deer season. "Real" shooting is a much better training aid than punching paper and your ,

rifle will see the same wear and tear in either case.

That 22 250 will work too... and with a proper bullet will slay deer.

Now if you just "need" another rifle... thats a whole nuther issue aint it? <wink>

  6. Have you considered the .250-3000 Savage, .257 Roberts, .25-'06 Rem, or .257 WbyMag?

With lighter weight bullets, all of these cartridges make fine varmint cartridges, and the .25-'06 and .257 Weatherby will reach out and touch coyotes in the next zip code.  Then with heavier bullets, all three make fine deer cartridges.

If minimal recoil is desired, I'd say the .250-3000 Savage would be the way to go.  This grand old cartridge was the first factory load to break 3,000 fps, hence the name.  As the mildest of the Quarter Inch Bores, it has a shorter effective range when used on deer sized game.

  7. A good bolt gun in .223 would be ideal. Light recoil, plentiful ammo, decent ballistics. It'd make a good 100-yard rifle, although I don't know why you want to kill coyotes. Leave 'em be.

Oh...float the barrel and bed the action. It'll do wonders for accuracy.

  8. I'd go with the Ruger .204 caliber. It has plenty of zip, with good knock down power. The .223, .270 and .308 are also great calibers for coyote hunting. That don't have a whole lot of recoil.

What you and your brother have right now are great calibers for coyotes. I love my Savage Model 12FLV .22-250. I recently have shot the .243 caliber and liked it. For coyote hunting. Look at anything from the .22WMR - .17HMR for shorter distance shooting. Something like the Ruger .204 and up for longer range shooting.

  9. Sounds like a .25-06 Remington might work or you.

  10. A 22/250 is the perfect gun for the job because of it's flat trajectory. The .243 is also a favorite caliber among coyote hunters. I would stay with the 22/250 and after that I would use the .243 if you want to but it is not necessary.

  11. The .243 is an excellent coyote rifle.  If you are really looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle (and we all are) then look into a .25-06 Remington.  I have a Remington ADL chambered for that round and it is devastating on fox and coyotes.  The recoil is minimal. It will give you lots of pelt damage, though.  You can ask 20 people this question and get 20 different answers; all of which could be right.  Just pick a varmint caliber that you are interested in and give it a shot.  The worse thing that can happen is you don't like it and trade it in for a different rifle.

  12. in the fall with shots being at longer ranges i like the 22-250..243 win. and even the 6.5x55,but in the spring and summer where i hunt the brush is thick and the shots are about 100 yards or less,so i use the 32-20 win(with 100gr 1/2 jacket bullets@2100 fps) and the 30 carbine. i also like the marlin 9mm camp carbine and 30-30 win for close range coyotes.if i was to buy a new gun for deer and coyote i think it would be either the new 270 or 7mm short mag.
