What would be a creative way to make a timeline?

I need to make a very long and detailed timeline for US history and I was wondering how you could display everything creatively. Not just like the subjects itself (like showing pictures and stuff) but the timeline as a whole.

May be you could make the time line look like a vine or a tree limb coming off  "the tree of history".  Maybe since it is U.S. history you could incorporate the colors of the U.S. flag.
