  1. It depends on what they do.

Some only inspect, test, check for CO, and maybe clean a burner or pilot.

Some will pull a blower and clean it. We used to do that with a general service but now that is another $100.

My utility ran a special in early spring. I worked for Sears and we had an inexpensive  deal sometimes as low as $79 starting in Sept as a "pre-season special". Normal price was over double that.

I would say wait a couple of months. Sept is a low time for work and there are more deals. Most heat/cool people are real busy at the moment with A/C work.

Then again there are alot of out of work installers because of the housing situation.

    Good Luck.

  2. to get prices from local companies in your area you should try:

    http://www.ContractWars.com

I have used it a couple times after I heard about it from a friend, like it a lot

  3. It depends on if you live in a smaller town or a city. I live in a small town and we've never paid over $150 to have ours inspected and cleaned. It would probably be higher in a city, but I would suggest getting quotes from several companies and then making your decision.
