My friend is running a summer school for a group of 26 kids, ages 3 to 5, with the theme as animals- they have done face painting, an `animal parade`, jumped into a ball-pool with condor wings, animals they have considered include tiger, panda, elephant and condor. Anyway, he asked me to help him to think of ideas for next Monday afternoon`s lesson, maybe you guys can help me think?

  2. The best thing to do is to ask the kids which animal are they interested in learning about. You will get enough ideas to last you a whole year. Because you wil get so many ideas, it may be hard for the children to pick just one- so do a vote. Make a simple ballot box out of an old refrigerator box and then make ballot cards with the animal pictures on them after doing a little narrowing down. Not only will the children feel in control of their own learning, but you are also exposing them to the idea of democracy and tying in current events with the presidential election coming up. Good luck!

  4. One fun activity is to make lifesize Emperor Penguins out of black paper (and white paper, too, of course).

The penguins are about one meter tall and it's fun to see the comparison of height with the kids.

You'll need a roll of black paper - then you can pre-cut the forms and let the kids assemble them.  Cut out fronts and backs and staple (some of the kids can do their own stapling, and some will need help) around the edges and stuff them to make a more 'real' representation of the penguin. You'll need yellow crayons, too; Emperor Penguins are  yellow/gold right at the top of the throat.   Eyes, and beaks and feet. . .and you have a lifesize penguin.

here's a link to a website about Emperor penguins, if this helps any.

  6. Look at this web site = I'm sure you'll find something you can easily do with that many children.

Maybe lunch bag puppets - easy and kids love them - glue sticks and craft supplies = yarn, felt, pipe cleaners, paint, foam shapes etc.    Then a good old fashioned sing a long of Old Mc Donald Had a ZOO!
