My budget is not too high. I'm thinking $600 or less (but I'll be open to higher prices for better quality). I have basic photography knowledge. I took Photo 1 and 2 with a film SLR. I want a good quility DSLR- I was thinking a Canon EOS 40D or a Nikon D40.

  1. The Panasonic brand makes a great camera the DMC FX-20

It is NOT an SLR but the bells and whistles it has are just fantastic, as is the price. There is another model, the -30 or -40 too with more mega pixels.

I love the thing and I was always a "dyed in the wool" SLR fan.

If you NEED the functions of an SLR-1000mm telescopic lens-fine, but for all that most people use a camera for, this is great.

  2. You can't go wrong with either brand and model.

Are you using SLR now? Which brand?

If you are, stay with that brand since you built up a collection of lens already.

  3. The Nikon D40 is a fair price, I'd go with that but just know if you want to upgrade your lenses, that will cost $ to spend.

  4. nikon d60 is a great camera. From beginner to expert you'll have a blast and learn really quick on how to take great pics

  5. def the cannon, they're the best that you can get. You can get a really good one at electronic express for 699

go look at it on the source below

  6. HI C.   Looking at the Canon EOS 40D....  Expect to pay over $1000.00 for body alone.   But you have a good eye!!  This is one nice camera:):    Your budget puts the Canon Rebel XSI in your  range and you can get that model in a kit which would include a lens.    I have the XTi...  and I will tell you that it is more than user friendly.  I hate to read those manuals... I know you are suppose to, but I just can't... and even so,  I was able to understand all of the features and settings and start taking pictures right away.   You may be more patient and be able to get through the manual.. and in that case you will be completely informed.   I don't have any experince with the Nikon D40 and most people answering your question will just have one or the other to comment about.  If you want to compare both cameras side by side, I urge you to access DPReview  .   com.  Great site for new consumers wanting to know the ups and downs, ins and outs of the new models on the shelves.  Professional photographers are hired to field test new arrivals and write reports as to how each performed.     So before making your final decision... check with them.   I think you are going to enjoy camera shopping.  Don't get bogged down.  Stick to just a couple from which to choose.  Makes like easier.   :))  Thanks for reading my suggestions.

  7. Based on hours of research myself... I'd say you have chosen the best two brands, Canon and Nikon.  Those are the ones I am considering myself.
