  8. Hi.

There may be a few martial arts that will tend to suit you better than others but for the most part it is personal preference.  It also depends on what you want to train for.  I'll run through a few to give you an idea of some of the variations between the different styles.

Tae Kwon Do.  This is a style that relies heavily on kicking so if you like kicking this is the style for you.  It sounds like you are in pretty good shape so you would probably do well in this, however your upper body strength wouldn't come in to play very often.  Tae Kwon Do is primarily a sport art and generally isn't suited to self defense (though it depends on the school and how it is taught).

Jujitsu.  This is a grappling style, it is used in sport often (MMA / UFC) and works well for this purpose.  For self defense it works well but only when it comes to one on one situations.  In Jujitsu you will tangle yourself with your opponent in order to subdue him, usually on the ground.  However if your opponent has a friend close by who sees you fighting with his friend you are likely to be attacked by two people.  Jujitsu doesn't usually leave you in a position to fight off two people.  However you upper body strength, height and whatever other muscle you have would all be utilized in this style.

Wing Chun.  This style is a very efficient style of combat using mostly traps and strikes with only a few main kicks that are usually low to your opponent’s legs.  The specific emphasis they place on self defense and/or sport will vary from school to school.  Your upper body strength and height will come into play with this style.

Kenpo Karate.  This is a category of styles many of which are based on self defense.  They do vary but are all similar enough that you can talk about them generally.  Kenpo Karate styles usually incorporate techniques and/or concepts from many different martial arts.  For example my style, Chinese Kenpo Karate, combines Karate, some Jujitsu and some Hung Gar Kung Fu making it a well rounded system.  This is true for most styles of Kenpo Karate to varying degrees.  These styles are primarily stand up martial arts and will use you upper body strength but also use a decent amount of kicking.

    -----------

As I said before, it's for the most part personal preference.  What you should do is visit schools in your area to see what's available and then choose from those rather then deciding on a style only to find out no one teaches it locally.

More often than not the style you choose will have more to do with the instruction and atmosphere of the school than the art its self.  This isn't to say the art has nothing to do with it; some styles are oriented toward sport while others are oriented toward practical combat and depending on what you want to train for you may want to avoid some styles.  Ask questions about what each school you visit emphasizes and go from there.

Also look for something you want to do, sit in on a class to watch or take an introductory course (which are relatively cheap if not free) to try the style out to find out if you like it.

Just remember, it is the martial artist who makes the art, not the other way around.  You will make what style you take work for you and your goals, it just helps when you have instructors who are willing and able to help you do this.

I hope this helps and good luck finding a school :)

  9. you're tall for that weight so you would probably have a reach advantage over others who are mostly short and stocky. so boxing or muay thai (if you also want to learn kicks) would be good. since you have upper body strength and endurance you might also want to try greco roman wrestling which is wrestling focused on takedowns using upper body clinches. the best thing might also be to find a gym with a well rounded mma program so you can learn the ground and stand up game since they are both important.

  10. Based on the previous answers, they are just naming their favorites.  First of all, do you have any fighting experience (high-school wrestling, boxing, etc)?  If you are wanting a good practical self defense art, I'd lean toward Krav Maga.  If you want to compete with others, maybe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (mostly grappling), Judo (mostly throws and takedowns) or TaeKwonDo (stand-up, lots of kicks).  If you are an "upper body" fighter, again I'd lean toward Krav Maga or boxing/Muy Thai/Kickboxing.  What kind of fighting do you want to do?  What are your goals or interests?  What do you want to get from your training?  FYI, I started with TKD (didn't really like it), did about 3 yrs Isshinryu Karate (liked it, but moved).  Learned MCMAP in the Marine Corps and police defensive tactics (mostly arm and wrist locks) and now I'm into Krav Maga (my favorite.  Very realistic and practical).

  11. Jiu-jitsu, Muy Thai, and boxing have the most credibility. If you want to choose one, I would choose jiu-jitsu because last time I checked you are nothing in a real fight on the ground without that. Wrestling may help, but to win a fight you need a realistic ground game that focuses on beating a larger opponent.

TKD and a few others are nothing against jiu-jitsu. Don't believe me? Real simple, see the *** kickings left and right by the Gracies on YouTube. High kicks and that other flashy stuff does not work in a real fight. Maybe against some idiot, but it is so easy to control the distance in a fight if you know what you're doing.
