  1. The Book of Experience. No, I'm not kidding. Just tinker around with whatever program you want to learn. Explore what's in the menus, and test them out. It's much more effective to do hands-on learning than just passively reading it in a book.

    If you really need a quick definition of what something does, just search for it on http://www.google.com (for example, "microsoft office word paste").

What ever your operating system is there should be a Dummies book for it.  For example I have Windows Vista and also have Windows Vista For Dummies.  Either go to your public library or look up their web site.  Their books are really good for people who aren't techy.  Once you know a few things, then try fiddling around the different programs.
