The Pryndain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander.  First one is The Book of Three.  A fantasy series.

The Jigsaw Jones books are great for kids that age. They're about about a kid and his friend Mila who solve mysteries for their classmates and friends. I loved them.

Another great series is the Bailey School Kids. There's a load of them, and the books are about a group of friends trying prove someone is or isn't a mythical person/creature. Some examples are "Vampires don't wear polka dots" or "Cyclopse doesn't roller skate" or "Frankenstein doesn't plant petunias". I enjoyed all of them.

One last series is the Boxcar Children series. It's a bit more on the normal side, but just as good. They're usually some form of mystery or adventure these four brothers and sisters face.
