I would really love to start my own business of some sort but I'm not quite sure what would attract a small town mind other than a bowling alley. I don't have a lot of training but do have self teaching drive. What suggestions would you have for me to open my own business. Restaurants are not what I am looking into since there is one on every corner.

  1. I suggest you look into home based businesses then.  I created a blog on my 360 yahoo page with over half a dozen different industries to look into.  You have the same income opportunity as a traditional business without all the over head expenses.  Information on my blog on scams and what to look for, businesses registered with the BBB and many other things to learn about.

  2. There are many ways to find a business in a small town.

First of all I would only go into a business that I like. Don't start a business just for the money. Another tip to keep in mind is you want something that has a market. You don't want to get into a business that will take years to start generating an income; you want something that will bring in revenue from the very beginning.

With that said, here some ideas:

    1. I would take a good look in town and find something that's missing in the town and create a business that offer products or services that people want.

For example say the nearest Mexican restaurant is 40 miles away and you find a lot of people travel to that restaurant during the weekend. You could start your own local restaurant.

Also when your around town pay attention to people's conversations. What do they complain about? Complainants are a source for you to come up with a business that solves a problem.

You could also ask people around town what type of business is needed. This will give you some good feedback as to what people want. When you get a lot of people requesting the same thing you have found a business that already has a market.

    2. You could also create an online business that your can run from anywhere. You could live in the a small town and as long as you have internet accesses a computer and in some cases courier services, you can run your business successfully

There numerous opportunities as a freelancer, check out www.elance.com. You could also open an online store or sell other peoples products as an affiliate. The possibilities are endless. I would start be figuring out what areas I have a passion for. Once I have listed the things I'm passionate about, I would look for business opportunities in those areas.

That's The Way I see It!

  3. I'm a small business owner from a small town (700 people if you count those who live outside of the corporation limit) and, after four years in Columbus, OH. I am moving back at the end of this month and I'm taking my businesses with me.

One option is to start a business that has a larger reach than just your small town.  You don't have to start a retail company where people come to your location and you sell them $5 widgets that you bought for $2.

Have you considered a home based franchise?  Email me and I will send you some info about the one that I bought.
