What would be a good exercise for in the pool?

I´ve got a swimming pool next to my house and I like to swim, but for how long should I swim if I want to "shape up"?? and what other exercises can I do?

I had an accident some months ago and sometimes my ankle and knee still hurt..

  1. Just do lots of lengths. I mean do 10 normal stroke lengths, then 10 back stroke lengths, then 10 butterfly, then 10 dolphin and keep going like that. Thats what i would do anyway
