What would be a good first car, preferably suv with good mpg?

I'm looking for more of an suv maybe wagon or something, not like the typical car, such as the honda civic.

Something with gas milage of about 25 in the city.

plenty of cars can achive that figure , 25 is pretty bad cit y MPG nowadays..

get something off the wall like

SUV's and good gas mileage do not go together!  Probably the best in the class would be either the Toyota Rav 4 or the Honda CRV, both of which hold their resale value very well and finding one in your price range might be difficult.

Honda CRV. Small SUV style with great MPG. They run forever like all Honda's

If you are looking for something new then you will have to spend alot more then $10k in order to buy any SUV. Used you have many great options. The honda CRV. Subaru has the Forester, Outback, the impreza wagon. The Saturn Vue and and the Suzuki vetara.
