  1. yeah also check out danscomp.com

  2. For starters I suggest either Merida or Giant.

Merida has always been top class, and the prices are more friendly than other manufactures, however, as a starter you don't need to look at Race series models (only if you have some money) but Sport series are good too.

like this one: http://www2.merida-bikes.com/en_INT/Bike... .. --> this is a typical starters models, the fork could be better but the price is good. Derailleurs are very good for starters- Alivio front, XT rear. The only thing I hate is the cheaper disc brakes but unfortunately Merida don't manufacture Sport series without em anymore, except this one-> http://www2.merida-bikes.com/en_INT/Bike... (and this is also a much better bike than the previous one). only race models come with decent V-brakes. so from race series I suggest this one: http://www2.merida-bikes.com/en_INT/Bike... ..if you have money, go for it. it should cost about 1600 bucks.

Giant. look at this site http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike...  I ride Giant myself and love it. You'd have to look at either hard tail or sport series. Sport is the cheapest series but Giant is always been top notch, even if it's a cheaper model, like from Sport series I've used http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike... Giant Rincon. the price is very good. even though, the older model I have ridden had V-brakes, this one is extremely durable and feels amazing. I know a bunch of people who have went pro from this, using this as a starter. it's capable of a lot of things. you'd typically need to change the pedals to clipless and stuff but it's ready. the fork is not so good (like on all models around this price) as well as I'm not sure about disc brakes but at least those models I have used were amazing. From hard tail series, http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bike... XTC 2 is a good model. I currently use XTC Zero but it seems like in the states it isnt possible to get this model atm. So anyway, I can assure the amazing quality. you wouldnt need to look at Zero but check out XTC 2. it's the same series just come in lower price and ain't as good as zero. but you need to check it out if you have money, it's an amazing racing bike.

with other manufacturers... im not sure if theres anything good by Gary Fisher bikes in the US or wherever you are but be sure to check it out. this is another manufacturer that wont make S****y bike just because it costs less. the frames are amazing.

be careful with Trek. I like trek but it needs to be their high end bike. lower costing models are bad.

I, for real like Cannondale and especially Specialized (my next bike will be Specialized) but again- theyre high end stuff. I dont think theres anything worth checking out at lower price.

and you need size 18" or Middle (M) model.

  3. First, what is your height?  this will depend your frames top tube and frame size. Also, it will depend on how much money you have upon buying a bicycle.
