Hello,

I am 15 1/2 years old, 4'10" is my height, i am short i know..

i run around the block each night which is 1.16km or about 0.72 miles.

What would be a good time for that length? I am getting into condition for high school soccer, so anything can help.

My guess, is about 4 1/2-5 minutes?

any help appreciated

thanks

  1. Well if you are trying to get in shape I would seriously recommend doing some longer distance runs.

If you are simply sprinting  to see how fast you can go 4 minutes would be a reasonable time. Whoever said they run a 4:30 pace is lying to you BTW. No HS runner is running that pace for a workout. Very few even run that pace for 2 miles in races.

But seriously, try to run at least two miles in about 14 minutes give or take. Running 3/4 of a mile isn't going to get you into good condition.

And I am assuming you are a guy BTW....

  2. Since you are conditioning for soccer, definitely consider extending some of your runs.  Gradually increase the distance for a couple of your weekly runs until you can go for 3 or 4 miles.  Go easy on those runs though, because they are designed to increase your endurance, not speed.  That will certainly help in an endurance game such as soccer.

As far as your 3/4 mile time goes, consider interval training one day per week.  Do you have access to a track?  Perhaps you could try a workout where you warm-up easy for a couple laps (1/2 mile) followed by running 200 meters (half a lap) at a fast pace.  Fast pace doesn't mean to kill it, leave enough in the tank so you can keep jogging slowly for another 200 meters.  Repeat this perhaps six to eight times before cooling down with a very easy 2 more laps.  If you don't have access to a track, do the same distances for warm-up and cool-down and for the main workout run hard for say 45 seconds followed by say 75 seconds of slow jogging and repeat that six to eight times.  This is just an example, you could modify it a little.

So you have a couple days per week where you go longer and a day reserved for speed.  Three of the other days may be a good time to run shorter distances such as a mile or two.  Here is a sample week:

    Monday: Day off

    Tuesday: Track workout (6x200 meters + 1/2 mile warm-up and 1/2 mile cool-down)

    Wednesday: 1.5 miles

    Thursday: 3 miles

    Friday: 1.5 miles

    Saturday: 1 mile

    Sunday: 3 or 4 miles

Right now, you are only running 3/4 mile a day, so I recommend gradually building to something similar as to what I have mentioned over a few weeks.  Always listen to your body too.  If you need an easy day or an additional day off, it's OK.  It's better than getting hurt.  Good luck!

  3. i'm in the the u.s. army and run time standard for a 1 mile is 8:36 averaging about 2 minutes per quarter mile. so if you say you can run in between 4 to 5 minutes of 3/4 of a mile that is actually pretty d**n fast but since your going out for the soccer team you're going to need alot of stamina and endurance along with your speed,i recommend you run longer distances..

hope my answer helped and goodluck

  4. Antonio-

I am not a track runner myself, but my two best friends are.  A good mile time for girls is 6 minutes and for guys I think it is between 5- 51/2 minutes.  If you can get a 4 minute 3/4 mile that it phenomenal, but getting a 4 1/2 to 5 minute 3/4 mile is exceptional.  Keep on pace to run at 6 1/2 to 7 minute mile.

Training for soccer should more more long distance though.  You run on average 6-8 miles with an hour of play.  Try running to the next block in addition to running yours.  It is better to train distances for soccer, it will also improve your sprint time.  Aim for 3 miles Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and run 1 mile on the off days.

    Good luck with your soccer!

  5. im also 15 1/2, but im a track runner so it all depens on what pace you want to go at. for my mile i run 4:30 but that is at a fast pace. i can get a lot longer distance if i were to run slower but for your hight i would say that your doing well. ( that is not a jab at o ur short, shorter you are the less leg span you have so shorter stride)
