I want to know some times i should try and aim for during my freshman year for running the 1600. My fastest time right now is 5:30. At my middleschool championship meet i won 1st place in the 1600. I want to run track in highschool so i looked at the times of the 1600 runners of the highschool i am going to. The fastest guy was 4:15.33 while the slowest 4:22.38. Am i going to have to be able to run in the 4 minute range to win even one race ?

  1. Hey man, This is Marcus. The other athletes are correct you really do have to drop your time in the Mile in order to win races for High School. I ran 5:30 miles when I was in Middle School in the 6th grade and was winning races. In 8th grade I knew it was time to step up my game for High School so I dropped my 7th grade time of  I believe it was 5:25 probably, to my 8th grade time of 5:07. I came in 2nd place my friend Joshua Estrada  beat me with a time of 4:54. But the best thing that I think will help you is running Cross Country of course as well as running an extra event in Track and Field.

  2. breaking the 5 minute barrier is always a great accomplishment for a freshman. you won't win any races with a 5 minute mile on the varisty level but underclassmen usually don't score in distance events because they a) dont have as much exerience b) dont have as much training. dont worry you'll get to it.

ps- breaking the 11 minute barrier should also be a goal for you in the 2mile.

  3. to win a race, you could probably get away with at least one win with a 5:00 to win a Sectional or Regional race you WILL go 4:30 or faster, just run your race, dont worry about what the seniors are running, worry about what the other Freshmen are running.

  4. at a varsity level, to win, you most likely will need a 4-something mile...For freshmen races, or non-varsity, you can still do well with a low 5.  5:30 can be improved upon, you may still do well, but you most likely won't win races often for a year or few.

  5. Well competition improves so the 1600 time will drop pretty swiftly.  The amount of training from MS to HS is a big transition so I would say you are fine as are.

Plus you were probably looking at a major meet.  There will be slower people than you, odds on.  But relax and enjoy the training, you'll be sub-5 fairly quickly I'd say.
