  1. go to a local surfshop

  2. A surfboard is not a used car. You don't buy a used one and then fix it up, it just doesn't work that way. Buying a used board is really not great, and I don't reccomend it to anyone; you just don't know whats been done with it. Surfboards cost money, but for good reason; a good board is worth it, and used one's usually aren't.

That said, if you have to buy a used board, some surf shops sell them. Some shops have whats called a swap, where people bring in their boards and other surf related things, the shop sells them and gives the seller store credit. Its usually reliable as the shops don't have a whole lot to gain by tricking customers, and generally wouldn't want to, because the people who work in surf shops are genuinely stoked when they can help other people to start surfing or surf better. I would never trust anything from craigslist or over the internet, that would be a waste. Spend the money on a new board which you can have confidence in.

As for repairing a board, after many years I've found my own way of doing it, after destroying a couple boards of my own and my friends. But, I only repair minor things, something major I usually pay a ding repair shop to do it. And if its a really bad break, I find its better to get a new board. For you to buy a used board and try to fix it yourself would be waste. Go to a real surf shop and get a good board.

Below is a link on fixing boards, which I found very helpful when trying to fix my first epoxy board. The guy who writes it knows what he's talking about.

  3. This is as good as any. Thankfully, most real surfers don't spend too  much time on the computer, so I don't think you'll find lots of surfing 'chat rooms' and the like, but I'm not sure. I found this site by accident one night, and I have gotten sort of 'hooked', but believe me, I am a dinosaur, and not too much into the cyber world. I'd rather surf.

Shoot your questions at me, and I'll try to answer them (if they make sense, and give enough information for me to give you a straight answer. I have been surfing for 42 years, so I have probably, "Been there, done that" at least once, so I will try to help. However, I won't BS or sugar coat anything. Some people are no where near capable of surfing (like the ones who have never even gone swimming in the ocean), and it's not fair to lie to them. Surfing is supposed to be fun (and maybe a little 'spiritual'). So it should be shared, but only realistically.

Unfortunately, the ocean is already full of dangerous, disrespectful people, and the surfing world can live well without them, For all the fun folks, who aspire to be 'watermen', and laugh a lot, we got lots of room.

The price of used surfboard varies greatly, and the best place to 'shop' for a used stick is at a surf shop, not on line. A ride-able board can cost anything from $200. to $1,000.00 US (h**l, I have a 40 year old board worth $2,500.... and its 'used').  There are some fair web sites on surfboard repairs, but depending on how much work has to be done, many repairs are best left in the hands of professional ding men, whom you will find in a surf shop, not on line.
