It depends on the aircraft type.  The maximum demonstrated crosswind component on landing can vary based on the design of each aircraft type.  However, the pilot's own flying skills will also play a factor.  For example, if an airplane's max. demonstrated crosswind component is 20 knots, but the pilot does not feel safe and is having a difficult time on approach with a 10 knot crosswind, the pilot should elect to discontinue the approach and either use a different runway or divert to an alternate airport.  There really is no typical crosswind component because it can vary quite a bit depending on the wind speed and direction, as well as the runway direction.  But the maximum demonstrated crosswind component for airplanes in general is typically between 15 and 30 knots.  Again, it depends on the aircraft type.


  2. Most airliners have a maximum crosswind in the limitations so yes it has to be followed.  It usually ranges from 25 to 30 knots, including gusts, for a most commercial planes.
