Question:

What would be an Australian substitute for 'American cheese' please?

It's to be used in a macaroni cheese recipe, with the same amount of butter and twice as much extra sharp cheddar as American cheese as the 'cheese' ingredients. Any ideas? I'm wondering whether just basic cheddar would substitute ok.

  1. I don't think it matters what country the cheese comes from, just use your favourite! personally, a nice tasty one works for me.

  3. From what I've read American Cheese is that nasty processed stuff that comes in neat slices.  So, I would advise you to use whatever cheese is your preference, so long as it's better than that.  I think most people just use cheddar in macaroni cheese.

  5. American cheese is a common processed cheese.  It's very mild and is commonly sliced for hamburgers and sandwiches. It's normally not made from a blend of all-natural cheeses, but instead is a processed cheese (i.e. it is manufactured from a set of ingredients such as milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, salt) which meets the legal definition of cheese.

    The best substitute would be a processed type cheese if you have any there.  If not, a mild Cheddar or Colby should be OK.

  6. Bega or Mainland tasty are both nice cheeses and would make a nice substitute. for American cheeses

  8. Plastic cheese like singles or that disgusting block of kraft cheese that they sell un refrigerated, it is wrong..it's not cheese but that's what they mean by "american chese"...I'd go for normal cheese like cheddar and none of this fake c**p
