Please be warned. It is graphic and may not be suitable for young viewers. I’m interested in your opinions about what you believe would be appropriate penalties for first time offenders regardless of whether or not they have caused death or injury or accident. I would like to hear from everyone but in particular those young people who are of driving age.

  1. Honestly, after being the victim of a drunk driver. And seeing other horrible consequences of their selfish acts I say: 1st offense pluck one eye out. 2nd offense pluck out the other eye. Sorry, but I have very strong feelings about this issue.

  2. First time offender:  You really need to differentiate between death, injury and no other people involved.

Death: 1 year prison, 500 dollar fine, lose license 5 years.

Injury:   500 dollar fine, lose license 1 year

No one else involved:  500 dollar fine, lose license 6 months.

  3. I agree that there must be a difference between the sentence for impaired driving, impaired driving with injuries, and impaired driving with death.

Assuming a first offender ... I believe that the minimum penalties should be:

Impaired driving/no injuries or death:  1 year prison, followed by 2 years revoked driving privileges.  5 years probation with required drug testing and alcohol monitoring.  $5,000 fines and court costs.

Impaired driving/ injuries no death:  2years minimum prison, 5 years revoked driving privileges, 10 years supervised probation with drug tests and alcohol monitoring.  $10,000 fines and court costs minimum.

Impaired driving/with injuries resulting in death of another:  Time to stop pussyfooting around.  5 years minimum prison sentence, lifetime revoked driving privileges, 10 years supervised probation with alcohol monitoring and drug tests.  $50,000 in fines and court costs minimum
