  1. If you don't have a receiver - none!

Stay away from HTiB's and save for long enough to ensure you can get separates. Check out sites like eCost.com and uBid.com who have Onkyo receivers refurb'd by Onkyo with a 1-year warranty. You can find TX-SR605 for around $250.

Match it with an SC145.5 JBL 5.1 system for $145 from the same place and you've got a good entry-level system.

When you get the upgrade bug, check out online speaker dealers like www.axiomaudio.com, www.aperionaudio.com and www.av123.com for speakers with much better performance than what brick and mortar stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc., can offer at the same price. Most of them give you 30 days risk-free in home trial as well, so you get to audition them where you'll be listening to them. You can't beat that!

My 5.1 system to date, just the speakers, has run me a little over $5,000 so far - all Paradigm speakers....but I did start off in the beginning with an entry-level system like the one I'm describing.

If you don't like my suggestions let me at least leave you with one piece of advice - stay away from BOSE. They are the biggest speaker scam out there. No highs, no lows, must be BOSE. You get $50 sound for $1,600. Total ripoff.

  2. The term "good" is very subjective.  Also it totally depends on what your price range is and what YOU think sounds good.  You should go listen to some speakers at a best buy, circuit city or other store.  If you want really good speakers and have lots of money then go to your local Hi-Fi dealer that sells high end equipment and listen to lots of stuff.  My 5 speakers cost a total $1600... used.

My opinion is that it's hard to beat Polk speakers at any price range.

I own the LSi series and love them.  You can find better prices on the web than the retail prices shown.

    Good luck

  3. Go to the wal-mart and get something from about $150-200 without a built in dvd player since you don't need it. You really can't go wrong.
