  1. A lot of poverty is cyclical.  It is a generational cycle that is extremely hard to break.  It is taught to the children by the parents.  It is a way of life that is learned and accepted.  In the beginning the child may try to break free of it but often times they lack the tools and the resources to do this on their own.  Resources being education, motivation, and strong role models.  The initial surge is strong and well meant but the follow up dwindles, money to continue education may become a factor, the family may not continue to be supportive of the child going to school, they may need the extra income in the household, a pregnancy may occur, transportation may become an issue, numerous setbacks could occur and without continued support from a role model complacency occurs and the generational cycle is perpetuated.  The person settles into their position at the local conveinience store as cashier and eventually works her way up to assistant manager which isn't doing too bad for herself she makes $11.50/hr right it pays the rent, yeah she might have to borrow money every now and then and yeah they are living pay check to pay check after 15 years but heh it could be worse.  It was good enough for her mom it is good enough for her.  However if she would have stuck it out 2 more years in nursing school she could be making at least double that own her own home and have some kind of retirement/college plan for her own kid!  If only she had the resources.  I don't understand why the high schools etc can't see why mentor programs are so critical and why establishing strong relationships with youth to guide them would make a difference in these situations!

  2. your 3 factors are a vicious cycle

unemployment (or low wages+high cost of living) cause attending worse schools (or frequent house moves, so frequent school moves)

this gives worse education = restricted job opportunities = low income = poor education for own children

low income also means poorer health (affects ability to learn and/or to work)

also means living in cheap (bad) neighbourhood, with less security and more exposure to violence, drugs, gangs and petty crime.........for many barely employable people petty crime is the only available job opportunity (small scale drug dealing, prostitution, stealing) leadng to trouble with the law leading to further problems getting a job (with the family having to move again)

drug and alcohol use makes the financial problems worse but is sometimes used in an attempt to escape a nasty reality.

Prices tend to be set at a level that gives good sales. While there are many wealthy in a country, these prices can be quite high. It is not problem with luxury goods, but becomes serious when it extends to daily necessities, like food fuel electricity and rents. fulltime workers can get pay increases (minimum wages go up)  but part time or casual workers, and people on pensions or welfare, get no rise so their poverty gets worse.

there is no conceivable argument FOR (in favour of) poverty: it is bad for everyone...even for the wealthy as they pay more taxes to finance  government programs for helping the poor....these keep poor people alive and help SOME of them improve their position. Poveerty will never be completely eradicated from any society; as overall wealth increases, the people at the bottom of the range will feel (and be counted as) poor even if 50 or 100 years ago their conditions would have been regarded as average or good. example: kings were not poor for not having TV and cell phone before these were invented; now they are an important part of getting and giving information so a person without them is very poor.

  3. I would disagree with that statement.  No matter what the "living wage" is there will always be the poor who earn less than the median.  Some of these people are poor because of lack of education but like in the United States most are in poverty by choices they either made or didn't make to better themselves and to be able to be more employable.
