  1. You should not seek citizenship on the basis of getting something for free.......honestly, there are no financial benefits anyway.

JOHN 666-----I do have dual citizenship and I am simply saying that it is not right for people to be taking advantage of the system like that.  You should not be saying what is in it for me.  My Canadian insurance is not good in the US and my US insurance is not good in Canada---therefore I have to maintain two insurance policies, how is that beneficial?  Also, while working solely in Canada I still have to pay income taxes in the US--how is that beneficial?

This person is asking what FREE financial benefits are there--virtually none.

  2. The ability to live and vote in both countries freely and without the need for a visa.

  3. This depends on which country you want the benefits from. The US does not recognize dual citizenship. When you become a citizen you have to denounce your citizenship of your native country.

  4. Lonia D.

You are wrong about that. It is perfectly permissible for people to seek citizenship of a second state for some financial gain or benefit. That is by far the commonest reason for seeking such status. In fact it is hard to imagine any other reason at all. Do you think, for instance, that Canadians might want to become US citizens just so they can vote in the USA, or become eligible, ir beween 18 nand 26, for selective service in Iraq or Afghanistan? I think not. As to the advantages of having dual US/Canadian citizenship, that depends on where you are at present living, and such things as how old you are.

For example, if you are American and aquire Canadian nationality, you can live and work in Canada, and take advantage of their vastly superior social services and benefits.

In Canada, you could enjoy unemployment benefits, sick pay, family allowance for children, working tax credits, child tax credits, free medical treatment ands free hospitalisation. If appropriate, you could receive widows benefit, bereavement allowance and othe such things that do not exist in the USA.

There are also a number of countries in the world that welcome Canadian citizens more warmly than Americans.

If, on the other hand, you aquire US citizenship, you will obtain access to a much bigger employment market, with the possibility of achieving higher pay, and if you are young, or have a young family, young people can have a wider accesss to top class universities due to the availability of numerous scholarships that do not exist in Canada.

You can also find employment opportunities that don't exist in Canada, due to the colder climate, and of course, if you wanted, you  could live and work in the sun all year round!

If you were comparing, say, a Canadian with permanent US residence, to one aquiring citizenship, there would be the additional advantage that the citizen cannot be deported, unless they lied on their citizenship application.

Comparing the two, the advantage would be with the Amercan aquiring Canadian citizenship, though many Americans could not, because Canada only accepts certain highly qualified and skilled workers...and millionaires! I don't imagine there are too many Canadians in need of US citizenship, but there may be certain personal advantages that don't affect most of us. For example, if the Canadian citizen originated from a third country, aquiring US citizenship would allow him/her to sponsor a much bigger range of relatives than Canada allows.

There is one obvious advantage. If you travel where passports are needed, but where the local citizenry are not the most honest in the world, it is a d**n site harder to 'lose' two, than it is one, if you keep them in different places!
