My friend insists that he would be my uncle but that makes absoultely no sense. Seeing as that would indicate that my mothers cousin is her aunt/uncle's child, obviously, which makes it impossible for him to be my uncle. Correct?

So, do you guys mean to say that it’s OK for my cousin's 10 year old kid to call me by my name, a man who is 40 years older than him? But my kids, who are of the same age as my cousin's kid, call me dad, and my sister's kids call me uncle. A fine example we are setting for my kids and my sister's kids. There is something deeply troubling here, have a second cousin ones removed who lacks respect for his elders. What if I was his teacher as well, would he then call me Mr.C or Sir and what if I was a doctor? Does he call me by my title then? If my granddad were to see his grandson, i.e. my cousin’s son, call me by my name, the kid will get smacked!
The problem lies in the familial relationships in European countries which are in fact breaking up. The so called nuclear family is long gone in Europe and respecting ones elders is a thing of the past. But it is not so in Asian countries, thankfully. Surprisingly, in Europe, people still refer to royalty as his or her majesty or royal highness, and people of importance as His Excellency, except for the Americans who seem to have lost sight of all family ties, with multiple divorces and marriages. It looks as though power and wealth reigns supreme over familial loyalty and respect. It’s truly sad.
