  1. Fourteen hands. A quarter horse is a good example

  2. Depends on the 12 yr old.  When I was 9, my first horse was a 16.2 TB, but I wouldn't recommend that.  If they're less than 5'5, go for a horse that's less than 16-16.2 hh.  A good range is 14.2 to 16hh for kids.  How experienced are they?

  3. it depends on the kid if they are good at riding or not so good. My first horse was 15.3 when I was 6 and I still have him (i am only 17) but I have also had 8 or 9 along the way most of which have been bigger than 15.2hh and all the way up to my last horse that was 17.2hh. And just to add I am only 5 foot 3inches tall. BUT it all gets back to the kid how good are they at riding because I can still get on a 13hh pony and not look funny!

  4. You probably wouldn't want one bigger than 14 hands, unless the 12 year old is bigger and has experience riding.  Then a 14.5 to 15 hand horse is OK.

  5. It really depends on you but don't go and buy a 13.3 pony or a 17.1 horse. Just make sure you are comfortable with the size of horse you get and that it won't be too strong for you. I think that  a 14hh to a 15.3 horse would be a good size of horse for you. If you are a tall and exeperienced 12 yr old the horse could be bigger but not much.
