  1. that depends on how hardcore you want to take your backcountry expolorations.

there are many skis available thate are extra wide for serious powder and nothing but.  many ski companies are now making +100mm underfoot skis and even models with negative sidecut and reverse camber.  however, these skis really are not practical for everyday use at most resorts.

for good backcountry skis that can still be skiied elseware, try LINE PROPHETS or any of rossignol's BC skis such as the Scratch Sprayer BC, Steeze (park ski but very very wide and rated well in bc), and Scratch Brigade.  Volkls are also very popular for backcountry.

Really to make a decision you need to asses how extreme you want to be backcountry skiing.  no matter what you pick  look for:

    a) long skis

    b) wide skis (90mm underfoot AT LEAST)

    c) small sidecut (to minimize  sinking in powder)

  2. Wider is better.

Anything will get you through a gladed run that has already been skied down by someone else. You can do that with a set of rental skis.

Getting through the fresh stuff will take a different animal.

Since Karhu, G3 and Black Diamond specialize in Backcountry skis, it is my opinion that they are much better than skis made by companies that also make racing and general all-mountain skis. For deeper snow, I like the G3 Reverend and the Karhu Jak. The K2 Mt. Baker isn't a bad ski either and many people use it. I find the Volkl and Atomic "backcountry skis" too heavy.

  3. Look at the Dynastar Legend series. THey are a great ski for off-piste skiing. My personal choice would be the Mythic Riders because they offer a good amount of ski under foot for powder but when you get back on the groomers you can still carve some sweet GS turns

  4. lots of brands make backcountry skis.  in my opinion, volkl makes the best skis.  Check out the volkl bridge.  Other comapnies to look at are rossignal, salomon, line, armada, dynastar....  For backcountry you want wider skis.  it would be best if you could demo a few before you decide.
