I have a very energetic little boy who loves to dance. There is an Institute of Fine Arts near us that offers classes for 2-3 year olds in ballet, tap, jazz, and creative movement. Which would be the best for a child so young to have some fun and get his energy out?

  1. creative movement is probably something he would enjoy. But he would bet better tequnique in ballet. I have a nephew that loves hip-hop

  2. Tap. He's going to love the sound the shoes make.

  3. My brother, my sister and I went into dance at age 4 and go more out of ballet than any of the other classes.

  4. for now i would just put him in something like creative dance, but in a year or two , tap , and ballet so he can lay down his foundations. jazz can come later.

  5. tap, song if you're happy and you know it

  6. My son (now 5) loved tap when he was 3

  7. Definitely creative movement!!  Speaking as a former teacher tap and ballet are way too structured for this age group, I can't believe they offer classes for 2-3 yr olds.  When I taught our minimum age was 4 and even that was tough at times!

Since creative movement is all about fun and imagination, i would go with that.  You can always go check the classes out before you sign him up and see which one fits best.  Jazz is another option, but may end up being boring for him.  I can't really say though since I don't know their teaching structure.

Another option that you could look into is gymnastics.  Tumbling, vaulting and trampoline skills are all teachable at this age too.

My friends sons have been in dancing (tap and jazz) for years and love it.  I'm sure he will too!

  8. I'm hesitant to put any 2 year old in a dance class as well as young 3 year olds.  But that's my own personal belief after 20 years as a dancer, several as a teacher.  That said, all dancer need a solid foundation in ballet but only if they are planning to pursue it long term or take advanced classes in other types of dance.  If you are just looking for an activity for him to enjoy and burn off a little energy then I'd suggest either tap or jazz.  It depends on whether you want to here taps running around the house 24/7 or not.
