I've only been playing golf a couple years now and i still shoot low 50's on 9 holes. I bought 600$ Callaway Irons last year but never got a driver. I know if i want to shoot high 40's i should buy a driver. what would be an easy to hit driver for someone like me? and do they go on sale anytime soon like labour day or so? thanks guys!

  1. In response to the first answer, Vijay Singh still plays a HiBore, it's just the HiBore XL.  I play an XL as well.

There is a version of the Hibore XL that is 16-degrees of loft and a shorter 44" shaft.  That should be good for a beginner.  Beginners should use high loft, short shaft drivers.

The HiBore XL is last year's model so it should be pretty cheap.  Many of the tour pros like Vijay still play it instead of playing this year's HiBore XLS model.  These guys and play whatever they want.

  2. As a novice golfer you want to get and use a driver which is one of the hardest clubs to use. Why not use the 3 wood?  Tee your ball low and hit that club which gives you both a lifted shot and one of distance. Once you are proficient with your other clubs, the short game and putting, then waste your money on a driver.

  3. Check out some of the square drivers, they help you hit the ball further and straighter. The Nike Sumo Square and 5900 are great drivers that will help you get a high launch and hit the ball straight. Secondly, make sure you get a high launch shaft in it, most of the stock shafts are high launch, but the Mitsubishi ones, which the nike ones have, are slightly lower launch the callaway. or you could look at the FT-I driver which just went down in price. Get like an 11 or 12 degree loft in the driver.

  4. Probably one of the most under-rated driver for high handicap players is the MacGregor Mac Tec Driver. The value is amazing. You could pick one up pre-owned at many local golf stores or get them off the internet for less than $100. With your scores you will most likely want the driver in a Regular flex and 10.5 degree loft. The driver would be perfect for you. This club is unbelievably forgiving. You can hit it off the toe or heel and it still goes straight. Again, for the combination of value and performance, this can't be beat.

  5. Personally, I really like the Nike SQ 5000, I got it when it was $300, now it's $200.  It just feels good in my hands and responds to my swing.

There are so many drivers out today that can be played by anyone, your only real limit is how much you want to spend.  Go to someplace like Golf Galaxy or Edwin Watts Golf and field test as many as you can.  There are some that you can even upgrade the shaft for free, or up to $200 (depending on the shaft).  Go through a club fitting (flex, length, loft) for all your clubs to optimize your potential.

  6. Why don't you check around your local golf course pro shop. They have demo drivers that you can try out on the range.  It dosen't cost you anything....cost of the range balls...and probably an interested golf professional who will give you..professional advice and also tell you about any sales...or, maybe they have a good used driver they've taken in on trade.  Number of ways to try one before you buy one...and you might even get a better number on the cost.  Worth a try!!!

  7. get a high lofter *like 11 or 12 degrees* i have a 11.5 degree driver and shoot in the 60's as my dad alwyas said as a joke "the only thing that seperates u from greatness is distance...i love my hibore so forgiving...vjay use 2 play one, he stoped b/c he said he hit it to straight lol

  8. i like nike and cobra
