  1. Really?  Have you ever shot anything at a thousand yards, let alone a thousand meters?  Okay, first be aware that you must make a head-shot to drop a pig at that distance with anything but a .50 BMG.  That .308 could work with the right optics.  I'd recommend a two-thousand dollar (US currency): Swarovski PV 6-24x50 scope.

For shooting at that distance I would rather try the shot with something like a .338 Lapua Magnum, but truth to tell, I wouldn't be shooting game at anywhere close to that distance.

  2. My question is why are you having to shoot pigs at 1000m?  It is bloody easy for even the most inept hunter to stalk to within 100m of hogs.  Unless you have received extensive training in long range shooting, you are highly unlikely to be able to hit a pig sized target at 1000m.  To be good at 1000m, you have to be able to read wind direction and velocity, account for mirage, know exactly the trajectory of your bullet at that distance, use only match grade ammo, take in to account the rotation of the earth, the ambient temperature, the air density, etc and do it all accurately.  Can you do this?  If not, work on your stalking skills so you can get closer.  I think you have enough gun already.

As for a scope, I tend to favor Leupold scopes.  They are a bit pricy but they are good.  If you insist on shooting 1000m, you will need a very good scope of at least 16 power to be able to see your target.  If I were you, I'd also want a spotting scope for watching for targets.  Those little babies will set you back a pound or two.  Long range shooting is expensive, stalking is cheap so move up closer and cut your expense considerably.

  3. I am assuming you are meaning a wild hog or warthog when you say pig and not a "whistle pig or groundhog" where I come from.

There is a big difference between shooting paper at 1000 yards and cleanly killing an animal at 1000 with a .308.   I shoot my .308 tactical rifle in competetion at 1000 yards and let me tell you it will not be enough to cleanly kill a pig.   The issue that you run into is that  a .308 round (unless hand loaded a little hotter) will go sub-sonic on you around 8-900 yards.    I have 42"x42" targets where the bullets actually tumbled into the paper and "keyholed" the paper.   In order for you to get the velocity you need to reload your own.  If you are wanting to just make the shot (clean kill not an issue) then you will have to use hornady 168gr A-MAX bullets.  They are 50 fps faster than the blackhills sierra match king 168's.   Based upon this if only 50 fps make the difference between punching the paper with round holes vs punching paper with "keyholes" then I really can't see you killing a pig at 1000 with it.   I would recommend a minimum of 300 win mag to make a  clean kill at that distance.   I have seen a .338 lapua Mag kill an elk at 950 yards in the hands of trained shooters before and only  you can decide if you really think you are in that group to be taking that kind of shot. (which was done with the help of  a spotter)

As far as glass for you.  I have a 10x fixed mil dot on mine which is great for tactical shooting but there are better options.  leupold mark 4's are probably the best for the money.  I have used $4000 schmitt&bender scopes before and I just can't see paying the extra 3 grand for one of those.     For hunting with a kill zone of 18x18 then a fixed 10 is right on the line.  Magnification is better.

      Good luck buddy.

  4. 1000 meters? Really?

You are so much more likely, even if you can hit a hog at that range your more likely to wound it than to kill it. Good Grief!

But......just to answer your question, 308 or 7.62R scoped with a quality 50mm objective and years of practice and specialized training and your there.
