  1. Go to your local surf shop, not a dam bikini store, and talk to the guys there.  They can give you the best info for just starting off on your local waves.  A board where I surf, Swami's in Solana Beach might not be right for you.  Get a good used board and as you improve you will learn what board works for your style and waves..  Later dude

  2. Well the first board i rode was 9'2 and i used it from when i first started and for about year. then i moved down to a 6'3 and now i'm riding a 5'10. 5 footers are usually too short for somebody like me as i am 5'10" also, but my boards are perfect for my style of surfing.

Here are some good new boards you can look into but you should try and buy one used for your first. it's cheaper and your parents won't bust your balls if you end up playing golf instead.

and don't buy a softtop. everybody says too because there are so many people in the water but your gonna ditch it later anyway. Nobody wants to buy one of those used, and what are you going to do with a 12 foot purple piece of foam in two years? stare and sigh.

Go get one of those tourist hour lessons deals and you will get an idea of what you need.

and here's a real hot tip:

Buy Taj Burrow's book of hot surfing.

That book is priceless. If you have a bad session the book has the answer why. Amazing
