Race Cars.  They are something that they will play with for hours.  I suggest getting a few, maybe 4 or 5.  Depending on how close you are to the child.

since summer is on its way, and having a 6 year old myself, i say, sand toys, plastic yard tools: rake, mower, leaf blower, trimmer,(all at toys r us and or walmart) any thing that squirts water..............Have Fun

Get him a basket ball! I have a 9 year old son, and I adopted him when he was 5 years old and had abusive parents and was in foster care until I looked into adoption and adopted him. The second day he lived with me I bought him a basket ball, he absolutely loved it to death, and thats all he ever wanted to do was try and shoot hoops. 4 years later he still has the same basket ball and still loves it.

It depends on what he likes my son went to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie for his 6th birthday with his cousin and his dad (guys night out he is the only boy of 7 kids) Then they went to WWE wrestling that just happen to be in a town close by, he loved every second of it. We also bought him a new bike and allowed him to get his ear pierced. He still says that was his best birthday ever and that was two years ago.

i don't know what your budget is (it's quite expensive), but my 6-year-old is absolutely obsessed with a wonderful wooden marble track we got him for christmas.  he's probably played with it for more than an hour every day for the last two months (and my 4- and 8-year-olds like it, too; it's also very popular when he has friends over).  it's made by Haba.  you can google "haba marble" and you'll find lots of places that sell it.  you buy a basic set and then there are dozens of cool add ons (bells, zigzag tracks, change-direction blocks, etc.).

My son is 6 and he just Loves the new little skate boards for the fingers its the new thing for kids now , silly I know , but you can buy the ramps and the skate boards look real , and they can fix the wheels and collect the name brands , the older kids like them to. Also My son loves Transformers , and star wars , and those hand held video games , PlayStation , spider man , Batman , they love the action figurines. He use to love the Car's collection , he still plays with them , but not as much. O and the cool guns that shoot out the plastic things that stick to the wall. for the life of me I cant remember the name of it. awww umm , shoot sorry , but you will see them in the section they have so many different kids of them. And they don't look like real Guns but they are cool , the kids love to play with those to.
