My reason for this question is I just turned 18 a few months ago and in Virginia once 18 you can legally purchase a shotgun or rifle and no registration is required. Because I have this right to purchase and own a rifle, I would like to become a 1st class citizen by exercising this right. I am mainly planning on purchasing a rifle because as a patriot I would like to own a firearm in case there ever was revolution for liberty to overthrow a possible future oppressive government as it seems in the past few years more and more of our rights as u.s citizens are being picked away sacrificing freedoms for security and the like. So with that being said what would be the best rifle for me to purchase keeping reliability, how common the caliber of ammo is, and how easy it is to maintain in mind. Thanks guys

  1. And your Hunting ? is? You are on the hunting section not the citizens rights!*

  2. I will keep this short and sweet. The best rifle that has proven itself since the day of it's invention is the Avtomat Kalashnikov of 1947. Also known as the AK-47. I served eight years in the Marine Corps and have spent many a nights with the M-16. The M-16 is a excellent weapon to drill and qualify on the range with. Even the few times I have qualified on the range with it I had problems. The worst of which was in recruit training which cost me my first Expert Badge. Yes it was probably dropped thrown and every other thing you can imagine but the bottom line is that it constantly had double feeds and jammed and didn't get the job done for me.

The AR I have now is pretty nice and has not ever jammed on me not once. I have never taken it through a swamp or simply even knocked it over in the sand. However, if I did I know better than to even chance it. I would just break it down and commence to cleaning. The tolerances on the AR's or M16's are very tight. That leaves no room for sand particles or even the expansion of some of the parts when they heat up after.

My AK as ugly as it is has been given a torture test. I have thrown it in the water and sand and it with the exception of two shots it didn't let me down. Of those two shots the bolt didn't cycle back far enough to strip another round off the top of the magazine. There was a buttload of muck in the gas tube. The gas tube on this is ventilated so the gas escaped through the vents when the tube was breached. All that was needed was to simply rack the bolt back and release. After that I was sold on them. You can buy 3 or 4 AK's for the price of one AR. And the ammo is less than half of what .223 costs. The round is bigger and more powerful. The cheaper Wolf or Brown Bear steels cased Ammo works flawless in these guns. And the gun itself is a cinch to field strip and disassemble. All you need is a boot lace and a can of 3in1 oil and you will be set to go. You can buy 75 round drum mags for the AK and they make magazines as big as 70 rounds and maybe bigger. There are so many AK's kicking around and accessories for them it is rediculous. Take the Plunge and Join the Fun ... get an AK.

In addition to some of the other posters the SKS is almost the same weapon as the AK-47. It operates almost the same. I also like the SKS and would still recommend it before the AR.

The M1A is another fine weapon that I plan on buying in the next year. They are still used today as M21 and M25 Sniper rifles. Some of the guys I know that actually had them in their time in the military had nothing but good things to say about them. Other than the size and weight of them. They are notorious for being tack drivers right out of the box. I was looking at a M1A match rifle the other day for $1400 and that was used. Plus a box of  .308 is not the cheapest thing out there as well.

Ruger mini 14's and Mini 30's are also excellent weapons. Very reliable and bug free for the most part.

  3. Its great to see young people that really grasp the true meaning of the right to bear arms. Anyways, if some type of armed revolution were to happen, i myself would go with either the ak or sks. I believe the 7.62 round is a great caliber, and it can be bought in bulk for relatively cheap so you can have plenty to practice with and plenty to use if the need to fight for your libertys ever become a reality.

Also both of these weapons are not nearly as finicky with dirt as their counterpart the AR. And i know that the AR is much more diffucult to take apart and clean well, in my experience anyways. The AR is going to be much more accurate...but i believe the simplicty, ruggedness, and power of the round makes up for the loss in accuracy.

  4. Your reasons for wanting to not only own but to become proficient with an arm are exactly the reasons that the founding fathers had in mind when they placed the right to keep and bear arms as the second most important guaranteed right in the Constitution.

Good for you my friend, and welcome to the ranks of free men who are willing to fight to stay free.

Now, to the rifle. You really do not say if and how much firearms experience you have. For beginners and for experienced riflemen who want to practice their skills regularly, nothing serves better than a .22. They are a lot cheaper to own and to shoot. You can spend all day on the range with a $15 box of bulk .22 ammo. You can't even get warmed up with a centerfire rifle for that kind of cash. It does add up, so always get a .22 either first or as a ompliment to a centerfire rifle. I'd recommend a semi auto Marlin Model 60 (or similar) or a Ruger 10/22. That's under $200 for your first purchase.

Next, you probably want a semi-auto centerfire rifle in a meduim military caliber that has cheap military surplus ammo available. That means a Soviet 7.62x39 or a NATO .223. You have a lot of choices here, depending on taste and budget. An excellent condition SKS will run under $300, An AK semi auto version $400 and up. A Ruger Mini 14 or Mini 30, $400 to $600 used. Then you get to the AR platform rifles, anywhere from maybe $600 to over $1000.

For about a $500 budget I'd recommend the .22  and a very good to excellent SKS. Don't get caught up in accessories and customization, spend you money on ammo and developing your skill.  Good luck!

  5. AR15 Colt 6920 with an ACOG. Why? the ar is a rifle used by US police and military. Part are everywhere, everyone is using um and you can get ammo easily for it.  You can run like 55 grain loads out to 77 grain black hills loads through the 1/7 twist barrel.

With an ACOG you can make hits out to like 500 yards if you do your part. You will own your block.

Get some ammo, magazines, and training and you will be light years ahead of other gun owners.

  6. A good sks is hard to beat , I found that one out of three to be no good. The ammo is reasnable . They are ok up to two hundred yards. You can buy bulk ammo from these; Cheaper Than Dirt.com.  sportsmansguide.com. The 223 caliper comes in some real nice guns but are higher in price and dont have quite the knock down as the sks. A 308 with a good scope makes a decent sniper rifle.

  7. The m14 due to its durability, the round it uses, the availability of ammo, and the semi auto-auto variance option. The m14 was used with great success in Vietnam and Korea, and is still used today. the m14 probably still be used had the united states military not switched to the 5.56 and pieces of **** like the m16.  the akm would be a good gun to purchase also. other than that i agree with DJ

  8. Revolution???.......  In all due respect when it comes to firearms in a revolution everybody here has got it wrong.... If a country collapses and the govt uses the military / police to suppress the people an AK47 or M16 short range type weapon would be useless..... Small bands of people armed with these types of weapons would have little to no fighting chances against a highly mechanized military unit......

How a small band of people would be able to wear down and win would be to use sniper rifles.... Now the words "sniper rifle" are quite misused these days..... Against a military unit a regular hunting rifle would be a snipers rifle and would be the best choice... Believe it or not a regular bolt action hunting rifle easily outperforms any SKS, AK47, M4, M16 or other similar medium range assault rifle.....

If you have 4 guys 350 yards away and each has a rifle chambered in .308, 30-06, 270, 243, 300 Win Mag they could easily take out a small unit or do some serious damage.......

Of course the best ammunition to use is the same ammo the people are suppressing you are using.... That would be the .308 and .223.... If necessary you could steal or take by force this ammunition and it would fit in your guns.... .223 is generaly used in the M4 and M16.... Sure lots of people think these are a great gun but they still wont perform as well as a bolt action....  .223 in a Remington 700 SPS or a Savage bolt action rifle will easily outshoot those sloppy military guns at a distance.... Same goes for the .308.....

Learn to use a rifle..... Forget the .22.... Buy a bolt action rifle chambered in .223 first.... Then get a rifle chambered in .308 after you have mastered the .223.... This is what your foe will use against you... You with a better firearm and ammo you have stolen from him, or firearms you have taken from him that share the same ammo size will make it easier for you to succeed when the world goes to h**l in a hand basket.....

  9. Listen son,

Our form of govt. may not be perfect, and our system may have its problems, but it is still, by far, the greatest system in the world.

If you really want to be a patriot and a 1st class citizen, the best thing to do right now:

    1) Become an "educated" voter, and vote in the election this November.

    2) Become an educated citizen.  Go earn your college education.  Study hard, and don't cheat your way through.  Maybe you could study law, and serve to protect our rights and freedoms.

    3) Join pro rights political action groups like the NRA or Gun Owners of America.

    4) Become a volunteer.  Become part of the solution by getting actively involved in protecting your rights.

    5) If you still have the "itch to fight", volunteer to serve in the U.S. military.  There you can learn first hand why war is always the very last resort.  Better yet, try to get accepted into one of the military academies.

    6) Use your education and knowledge gained -- to help, support, and inform other Americans.

    7) (When you're a little older), be a good father and husband for your own family.

I'm glad you wish to be a good American citizen, and I believe you can become one.

    Good luck.

  10. You know I will get a load of thumbs down for saying this. but perhaps the best is a .22 LR

Ruger 10/22's have high capacity magazines you can purchase that hold more then 30 rounds, which is the standard for militarys.

22 ammo is readily available, by the 500 round bricks, less then $30 a box

is .223 and 7.62x39 ammo available also? yes, but funds to buy it may not be, and even so, its getting harder to find either.

for distance, if you are in an urban area with ranges not more then 100 yards, then it may not matter what caliber you have. you can annoy the h**l out of anyone dumping 50 round mags into the surrounding area around them.

  11. SKS sounds good to me. Fine little caliber, and is powerful enough to fight of possible future enemies.

  12. Can't go wrong with an AK or SKS (7.62X39) that is if you are looking for an assault rifle. If you are trying to "reach out and touch someone" (sniper rifle), the 762 NATO (.308 cal.) is very accurate and nothing beats the 50 BMG.

It's good to know you plan on exercising your right to bear arms, but if you want to keep your 2nd ammendment rights, I would highly suggest joining the NRA and join your fellow americans who fight to keep the right to bear arms.
