I fostered a cat about a month ago that was a stray, she was living on the streets for about 5 years and was only caught when she was hit by a car. i decided to keep her as she is old ( about 13 - 14) and it would be hard to find her a good home.

The problem i have is that she is ill, i have taken her to the vets and she has had a thyroid operation but over the week end her back legs have gone, she is finding it difficult to walk and she just sits and meows at me. she can't use the litter tray because she can't walk into it so she just goes where ever she is.

I am taking her to the vets again tomorrow morning i really think he might say she should put her to sleep because she is in such a bad way.

What i need to know is would a thyroid operation cause her back legs to stop working?

I don't want to give up on her if this can be fixed.

  1. One of my cats had hyperthyroidism. She takes meds. I have never noticed anything wrong other than she's hungary all the time.

  2. thyroid meds work wonders on my 19 year old tabby. She did the same thing. Meowing constantly when nothing shuts her up. that will deff help. Best of luck

  3. The typical thyroid operation is to slow down the thyroid, which had been acting as an out of control thermostat, burning up the reserves of the cat.

The problem with the back legs is likely unrelated.  The vet is the person who can give you guidance as to whether the situation is temporary.

Any decisions you face are not easy ones, as they never are.

  4. I don't think the operation caused this. Hopefully your vet can help. Good luck.
