If you are using western dress I suggest you go for a short cocktail dress that's comfortable and isn't too costly - most chain stores will have something suitable. You could consider hiring for the occasion if you're only likely to wear it once if you have a local hire store. Otherwise, having been to India, you have some wonderful clothes that are pretty inexpensive by our standards - perhaps you already have something that you can accessorise e.g. a co-ordinating scarf or jewellery? Also I suggest buying  co-ordinating handbag/purse and heels (I wouldn't recommend too high as you may be standing for a long time, I've lost count of the times I've winced at aching feet - I'd recommend some of those inner gel inserts to take the pressure off too!)
