What would be the best type of used car for a student?

I am a senior in high school and I really want to buy me a car by November. My budget is $4000.

depends on your environmental area... if it snows... definitely go w/ a truck (lower chance to get stuck in the snow), if u live somewhere doesn't snow like FL or CA, i would get a civic (no corolla cuz it's ugly) just to meet the $4000 range and has a great gas mileage.

with 4000 dollars, i would go with some type of toyota pickup. Very reliable, and good on gas.  depends on where you live though. that is a good all around vehicle. If you live in the mountains with snow, i would go with the same thing, but with bigger tires. If you live in a city in a valley or something, i would go with the same thing, but with smaller tires.

The options are huge though. 4000 dollars can get you a descent vehicle.

Try going to a local government auction, or city auction. I bought a 1994 jeep cherokee in tip top condition a couple of years ago, for about 1800 dollars. and a 95 dodge pickup with nothing wrong with it except gaskets in the transmission went for 500 dollars.

There are plenty of Shops who offer engine rebuilds for about $900-$1300 installed (+tax) for many late model foreign and domestic cars....So, even if you buy a car w/ high mileage for around $2000 you can have the engine rebuilt w/ new heads, gaskets, pistons, etc... and still get it done under $4000.00.  Just make sure the body, frame and transmission are still in good shape.  

Otherwise try a public auction, it's a good place to find a good deal.  They usually let you preview the cars beforehand. But you will need cash in hand or be preapproved for a loan.
