What would be the best way to approach becoming a diplomat?

I have my mind set on being a forgien diplomat. What degrees would I need? Who I should contact? What should I think about? ect. (Serious answers only please)

An interdisciplinary degree such as International Relations is helpful.  Those usually involve economics, poli sci, history, language, etc.  The only way to join the foreign service (unless through appointment) is to take the Foreign Service Exam.  There are two parts to it, the written and the oral.  Both very difficult and demanding.  Peace Corps is also a traditional way to begin working with State and USAID.
