What would be the best way to introduce a new kitten into a house with a dog?

I am considering adopting a kitten but am concerned about how it would get along with my 4 year old yorkie/jack russell cross, especially them meeting for the first time.

What would be the best way to get them used to each other too? And what you advise in terms of sleeping arrangements (sounds strange I know!)? Any help and advice would be appreciated, thanks.

  1. My dog's 12, when the kitten arrived he licked her non-stop for two hours...I mean non-stop, I had to hold both of them...until she was as wet as if she'd been held under the tap. Then they both went to sleep. That was it. Maybe she smelled right after that, I don't know. They're mates now.

  2. Cover it in chum/pal toss it in the room and shut the door... If it's ok in 5 minutes you have nothing to worry about.

  3. just dont do anything to force them to be friends just let them make their way

  4. Don't worry about it.

They may get in a scuffle or two in the beginning. But they will get used to each other.

  5. Personally if it was me i would have the two of them together when your around, but when your out keep them seperated. I would also keep them seperated at night too. Do this for a week or so and slowly start bringing m together for longer periods untill they are completely happy in one anothers company. Your JR may get on fantasically with the kitten but he may also get a bit fed up and your kitten is undoubetly going to be harrassing the JR constantly, this is the reason i would bring them together gradually.

You will soon know what does and doesnt work. Remember your JR was there first so you want to try and avoid stressing him out with the new arrival.

  6. Jack Russell's can be a hyper dog so you will have to do it when he is calm and make sure your dog like cats. if you dog barks at cats or chases them then its not a good idea to adopt one. but if you do get one take it slow and dont put the kitten on the floor with your dog into you know how hes going to be let him smell the cat and let the cat smell him and when they both seem calm let them play by you should watch them because if its a kitten your four yr old dog can hurt her by accident. and after there friends sleeping together would be no problem

  7. when we got kittens our dog was excited, we let her smell them and put them on the floor with her, all she wanted to do was play but for 2 little kittens, a big dog wanting to play was abit much, we told her off when she was too rough. as for sleeping arrangements, we kept them in different room till the kittens where abit older. all u need to do is look out for the kitten for a few weeks until the kitten is abit older and able to defend for itself, the dog will get used to the kitten being around and if it gets too much for the kitten as it would be older it will fight its own battles without u having to step in. the dog should be fine with a kitten as long as it doesnt like running after cats, i would advice u to start taking ur dog to places where cats r and if it went for one tell it off, this way the dog will learn that its not ok to run after cats. sorry if i went on abit, good luck with everything.

  8. put them in a cage together

  9. Just put a dog mask on the cat and a cat mask on the dog! Simple!

  10. went i first got my kitten and i introduced her to my dog (pomeranian), i just closed the doors and put them in the living room together, i saw with them, and they sniffed around and they did fine together...it all depends on your dogs personality
