Question:

What would be the best way to make a grape flavored, peach shaped cake?

My best friend's birthday is coming up. I've called him Peach [or Peachee Poo] since we met, so I want to make him a peach shaped cake.

I was thinking I could just make a white cake and color it a peachy color, but his favorite flavors are grape and lime.

Is there any way I could make this cake without making it seem totally gross?

  1. I would use the white cake like you said.  Then when it's cooled poke holes in it with a 2 pronged fork,(or whatever you have),  then mix up some grape jello and pour it in the holes with a baster.  After that sets up  in the fridge make a frosting out of pudding and half and half I think it is and put a little food coloring in it to make it a peachy color.

  2. Sounds gross to me.

  3. I think your best bet, on your budget is to make the white cake (or even a yellow cake) from scratch (or to add at least one extra egg yolk and substitute milk instead of water and use a box cake).

If you have access to an oven-proof bowl or casserole dish you can make the cake nice and round like a peach.  Be aware that the top is going to dome, and you will have to cut it off and flip the cake so that the round part from the bottom of the bowl becomes the top.

The filling becomes your source of flavor.  Make a simple syrup.  Dirt cheap recipe: boil equal parts sugar and water together.  Remove from heat and let cool.  If your mom keeps any kind of grape juice in her fridge, steal some.  Add it to the syrup to taste.  Someone you know can spare a few ounces of grape juice.  In fact, I bet your friend's mother has some grape juice in her fridge!  Flavor the syrup with juice or liqueur.  Heat up the stolen jelly until it is easy to spread.  Mix some of it into vanilla frosting.  You need to save some of your jelly, and you need to save some of your frosting.  Cut your cake into three layers with a serrated knife.  With a brush or a clean cloth, moisten each layer with your syrup mixture, and then spread jelly on top of that.  Spread grape jelly frosting on top of that.  Dye the rest of the frosting peach, remembering to set aside a small amount to dye green.  Frost your round cake, and dye a tiny amount of the peach frosting darker.  Use the darker frosting to make the ridge or groove most peaches have.  make the remaining frosting two shades of green so that your leaf can have some shading.

With a four dollar budget, you may have to stretch out your frosting with some vegetable shortening.  Vegetable shortening doesn't taste very good, or feel as nice as butter, so don't use it in your filling.  Only use it in the frosting on the outside of the cake.  No one eats that anyway.  Someone you know has a can of shortening they hardly use.  Ask around.  If you end up doing that, don't forget you have to add some more sweetener to the frosting.  If you can manage to get some confectioner's sugar, great.  If not, but you can get your hands on some artificial sweetener, that's good too.  As a last resort, put regular sugar into the food processor, and add that to your vegetable shortening frosting.  Again this is only because of your budget.

    Good luck!

  4. Try starting with a white cake mix, then adding red grape juice instead of water and also a little grape kool-ade.

Stack 2 round cakes on top of each other and wrap it in plastic wrap and stick in the fridge for a couple of hours. Take it out and carve it to make it look like the cleft in a peach and trim the edges so it's rounded. Cover with a peach/orange color and make a leaf out of fondant.

Okay with your additions to your question here is what I would suggest.

    1 box white cake mix

    Grape jelly

I would still go witht he grape kool-ade it's only like .15 for the store brand

1 conatiner white frosting-or 1 small container cool whip (store brand)

    food colors

    gum drops

Add the jelly to the cake mix along with the kool-ade packets.

Tint the frosting or cool whip and put over the cake as I said above.

***1 box mix well make 2-8in round cakes or if you have a metal or other oven safe bowl bake it in there.

  5. i don't know how good grape and lime cake is going to be. I think the best bet would be to make a regular cake (maybe lemon cake since it's close to lime) but buy white frosting and put food coloring in it to make it a peachy color and make it look like a peach. frost the cake with the peachy colored frosting. then add a stem with grape gumdrops for the stem then shape green lime gum drops for the leaves.

Or you can make a fruit cake like this:

ETA: You can try pulling it off with $4. If you have a box of cake mix (maybe white cake mix- like a dollar or two) then get grape kool aid powder (like 40 cents). Add 1/4 cup of the kool-aid powder to the mix after you have prepared the box of white cake mix as stated on the box. Then bake as normal. You can decorate with frosting then add decorations. This is kind of like the pastel cupcakes i saw on a kool aid commerical; I just edited it to fit your wants. =) good luck!
