What would be the cause of sparks and a pop coming from our air conditioner at home?

My husband was in one room and I in the other, when we both heard a pop and saw a flash like static electricity coming from the vents. Is this something to be greatly concerned about? Is it common? I've never seen it before, and am a little worried!

  1. No, this is not normal. Check your fuse or breaker box for a breaker that might be tripped. Sounds as a wire may have been laying on the trunk line and has shorted out. If 1 has been tripped just turn it all the way off and have it checked as soon as possible.

  2. It is probably an electrical short. It could be dangerous and cause a fire. Be careful and do not leave it on while you sleep tonight.

  3. I would guess that maybe you talking about a main return vent if you have central A/C, that may have an electronic air cleaner in it. This would be normal for that.

If this is a window unit there is something wrong and you should have someone look at it.
