What would be the cause of sparks and a pop coming from our air conditioner at home?

My husband was in one room and I in the other, when we both heard a pop and saw a flash like static electricity coming from the vents. Is this something to be greatly concerned about? Is it common? I've never seen it before, and am a little worried!

No, this is not normal. Check your fuse or breaker box for a breaker that might be tripped. Sounds as a wire may have been laying on the trunk line and has shorted out. If 1 has been tripped just turn it all the way off and have it checked as soon as possible.

It is probably an electrical short. It could be dangerous and cause a fire. Be careful and do not leave it on while you sleep tonight.

I would guess that maybe you talking about a main return vent if you have central A/C, that may have an electronic air cleaner in it. This would be normal for that.

If this is a window unit there is something wrong and you should have someone look at it.
