  1. Rome to Frankfurt by rail on a day train runs about $328 for first class, with two changes (Milan and Basel). That's a h**l of a long day. Somewhere around 15 hours of travel; arrival around 3AM.

There is no overnight train for that route, but you can go Rome to Munich without much hassle (although the train is sometimes late) for between $160 and $270 depending on how comfortable you want to be. If you go by night train, you waste less time. From Munich to Frankfurt, it is about $130, depending on what train you take.

Train travel in Europe is generally a good experience. The countryside is much more beautiful than from an airplane. Of course, if you take night trains, you only see so much of it too.

Flights tend to be pricey. I've never done a continental flight, so I can't give any advise there.

  2. To the Cheap airline list, I would add http://www.easyjet.com/.

They are insanely cheap, fly mostly out of London, but also have a fair number of flights from Paris and Dortmund to elsewhere in Europe.  Currently, flights from London to Paris or Amsterdam are about ₤60 (roughly US$100) roundtrip.  Sometimes they're as low as ₤10.

  3. Rome to Frankfurt is a long way - most people prefer overnight trains, becuase no matter how nice the scenery is, there is only so much of it you can take at a time!

Flights in Europe are getting a lot cheaper, as a lot of new airlines are now on the market offering cheap flights. You can look at sites like expedia.de (German travel portal) to look for cheap flights - or look at Deutsche BA (a good discount airline which flies from Frankfur to Rome). Both sites are in German... but you can type in "Frankfurt" next to "von" and "Rom" next to "nach", and enter your dates - and start to see fares.

London to Paris I would take the Eurostar train - it's really direct and quick, plus it's fun to say you've been under the English Channel! Their site is listed below.

Switzerland is a bit far from both Rome and Frankfurt - again, you may want to investigate flying rather than the train. But there aren't as many cheap airlines flying to Switzerland...

    Good luck!
