What would be the consequences of this?

I want to take out my spacers at home because I was only supposed to have them a week but the orthodontist says that I'm supposed to have them for 2 weeks. I've had spacers 2 times before this, and I only had them for a week. I'm pretty sure they messed up. I'm sick of these spacers and I want them out...I can't eat without worrying if they'll come out or not. What would be the consequences of taking my spacers out at home, by myself?

  1. Dont do it!  The orthodontist is trying to fix your teeth and you must have patience because its a long and gradual process!  Just because you had them for only one week before doesnt mean that you'll never need to wear them for longer!  You are not a doctor so (1) you have no clue what the procedure is, and the correct amount of time to use spacers to get the correct effect and (2) you dont know what you're doing so you cant possibly take them out with out putting your teeth at risk!!

The time to speak up was when you were in the orthodontists chair and he/she told you 'you have to wear these spacers for two weeks'.  THAT was the time to ask 'why two weeks?  I've only wore them for one week at a time before'.  You also could have said something like 'the spacers are very uncomfortable for me...is there anything we can do, or that you can recommend, to make it easier to eat, brush, etc'.  Since you missed that opportunity you could always call the orthodontist up and ask your questions.  If you really cant stand the spacers anymore then make an appointment with the orthodontist to take them out.  But remember...if you dont follow the orthodontists directions your teeth will never be fixed!  So if you cant follow the directions and want to do something crazy like pull out your spacers on your own, you should probably just tell the orthodontist you dont need his/her services anymore.

Whatever you do, handle it like an adult...and dont risk ruining your teeth on your own.

  2. While 2 weeks is longer than usual, if you remove them, then the teeth will close up the gap and your doc won't be able to get the bands to fit. Sorry.

  3. the gaps your orthodontist wants between them will close and then u cant have metal bands around them teeth ( normaly molars just eat slowly and keep them on ! it will be worth it and perhaps you should ring ure orthodontist and book a consultation and duscuss this with them your may be able to get them of early and get the bands on earlier ill leave a link on what orthodontic bands look like and why u need to wear spacers !
