I have a friend who's technically related to me, but not closely. He's going to be coming over my house today, and we're going to have a good time. I just don't know how to address him by, besides John. Is there any specific title to him? I thought since my mom's aunt would be my great-aunt, that my mom's cousin would be my great-cousin, so my mom's cousin's son would be great-second-cousin. But that sounds pretty ridiculous. Any help?

  1. He is your second cousin, as you share great grandparents.

He is your mother's first cousin once removed. Your mother's cousin is also your first cousin once removed. A first cousin once removed is either your parent's cousin, or your cousin's child.

  2. Stranger!

  3. He would be your second cousin. If your mom were asking this question he would be her cousin once removed.
