What would be the easiest way to bring in my fiance's euros into the U.S. and exchange to dollars?

My fiance will be able to leave Germany soon, and I plan to go and pick her up to bring her home. But she has a sum of money she wishes to naturally bring to the U.S. for our life together. We tried the simplest route of our banks, but it went not so good. Now we are considering just splitting the currency between us and carrying it over. Is this the only alternative, or is there an easier way?

  1. I don't understand why you have a problem. If she has money in the bank, and that bank can issue her an atm card, she can simply withdraw money here from an atm. If you want to move a larger sum, she can write checks here and deposit them to a local account (or yours) and when the checks clear you have your money. She could also purchase travelers checks in Germany and deposit them here if you want to avoid carrying large sums of money. If nothing else, she can go to a large international bank like Chase Manhattan, or BofA which has branches in both Germany and in the U.S., open an account and access it here in the U.S. Good Luck.

  2. If she brings more the $10,000 currency USD into the US she must declare it.  The ATM idea is much better or maybe wire money to a new account in the US.
