See if you can find a Corolla with about 75K on it.  Good gas mileage, cheap, and they last forever.

Good luck trying to get a Civic or Accord for 3K even with 75K miles.  They don't exist.

spend less than $2000 on a volvo 240 series.  safe, engine lasts 300,000 mi, simple to repair with a trustworthy mechanic.
