I have three rats, all girls. They get on well. I currently have a very large wire cage, but it seems to smell even after being washed (its not the bedding), so I'm looking for something that will be easier to clean and less smelly.

  1. I've had female pet rats for several years; I found a great cage that was actually designed for Ferrets; It has several detachable plastic shelves which you can pop on and off to clean; Rats need room to explore and burrow; the sheIves and ramps let you change the setting, which rats love; I used to have a smaller wire cage, but it really doesn't compare; It might cost you a little more than $100, but well worth it;

  2. The best cage for a rat is a multi level cage.Multi level wire cages will help with the smell because of ventilation. You can also wash your rats that what I do with mine. That helps eliminate the oils that collect on their skin.

    Hope that helps

    This site has a few for you to compare what you are after.

  4. The rat book I bought had a picture of a giant cage made out of chicken wire with shelves and tubes and hammocks all over. The base was one of those15 dollar plastic kiddie pools.

    I am also looking for a bigger cage for my 3 rats. I'm wondering if I should just get creative and make some kind of crazy, humongous rat condo. It certainly would be cheaper that way.

  5. this site is great! :http://www.dapper.com.au/grotto.htm

  6. we made a wooden cage with a perspex front which slides open     this seems to keep the smells in, shame.

  7. I got my rat cage from martins cages(The rat tower). Martins Cages is highly recommended in the rat community as far as I can tell. It was really easy to put together. We only have two rats in it but it can definitely fit more. Martins cages has the cheapest rat cages that are actually worth your money, and really good for pet rats. Sure you could get one at petco for $50, but is it really big enough? Will it really fit all your ratties needs?? Also, some of the other posts have links to websites with cages but a lot of them are ferret cages and those are NOT good for rats. If the bars are too spread apart they can slip through and get lost or hurt. And a lot of the times the shelfs or balconies are tooo high and your rat could fall and get badly injured.

    Here's the website for Martins rat cages

    It was pretty hard for me to find the perfect cage..

    So I hope this has helped!

  9. hey look around on google images, to see what kind of cage you want, size, looks etc then look around on where you want to buy it and see what they have, a smelly cage is fine for them, but if it bothers you lol good luck your friend, trish

  10. A jenny cage

  11. Get a Rat Tower from Martin's Cages.  http://www.martinscages.com/products/cag...  Get the powder coated one and buy some cheap linoleum tiles from a local hardware store to put down on the wire floors.

    The tiles will make it easier to wipe up messes, and the cage itself is not so unwieldy that you can't move it around.  Every once in a while spray down the cage either with a hose outside or in the shower (this cage will fit in the shower nicely).  If the tiles start getting funky, you can rip them up and put in new ones.

    The cage is also a great size for 3 female rats.  It's taller than it is wide, which is beneficial to rats, who like to climb.

    Hope that helps!
