What would be the jail sentence for poaching?

I am writing a story about a man jailed for poaching and would like to be as authentic and factual as possible . The man has a previous conviction for assaulting a gamekeeper and previous community service sentences. What sentence would a magistrate give? Might his offence go to Crown Court due to his record? What type of prison would he go to?

  1. Not prison.  Most likely 4-6 months local jail (county).

  2. What is poaching?  Does this involve eggs?  And if so, were they supposed to be scrambled or fried?  I like mine fried over easy.

  3. You will need to specify where this story is set and in what era, to get an accurate answer, as the laws vary from place to place and over time.

You used the word 'jail' instead of 'gaol' so I thought you were in North America, but then you used 'Magistrate' and 'Crown Court' which made me think UK, or Australia; so i could not even take a guess! lol

    Thanks for the extra info

Try this case as an example - this guy got 15 months imprisonment and had a couple of prior convictions.  He had been committed to the Crown Court for sentencing.

You might want to check that with a local lawyer in the UK, especially about the procedural stuff
